Summer travel in China: where the season works in your favour.

Summer is not the easiest season everywhere in China, but it can be excellent when the route follows green landscapes, higher ground, water and a slower daily rhythm.

Four timely ideas for planning a China trip now.

Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji

Early summer is a strong moment for southwest scenery. Guilin and Yangshuo bring river views, limestone peaks and countryside cycling, while Longji begins shifting from reflective terraces into lush green layers.

  • Build around 4 to 6 nights across Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji.
  • Use a private driver for Longji so rain and visibility can be handled flexibly.
  • Keep one softer day for tea, cooking, caves or village walks if the weather turns.

Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La give summer more breathing room.

Yunnan is useful when travellers want China in summer without building every day around heat. The route can move from Dali's lakeside pace to Lijiang's old town and onward to higher country around Shangri-La.

  • Best for travellers who prefer scenery, old towns, cafes, markets and slower mornings.
  • Add Shangri-La only when altitude, road time and comfort have been considered.
  • Allow 7 to 10 days if the route includes both Yunnan towns and highland scenery.

Rain and cloud can make Zhangjiajie more atmospheric, not less.

Zhangjiajie is a strong summer idea when travellers want scenery rather than only cities. The sandstone peaks can look especially dramatic with mist and cloud, but the route needs flexible timing because visibility can change quickly.

  • Allow 3 to 4 nights if pairing Zhangjiajie with Tianmen Mountain or Furong ancient town.
  • Keep cable cars, viewpoints and glass walkway days flexible around weather.
  • Use private transfers to reduce hot, crowded waiting time between scenic areas.

Summer needs earlier planning for transport, hotels and backup days.

In 2026, Dragon Boat Festival runs from June 19 to 21, and July to August brings stronger domestic summer travel demand. A good summer itinerary should account for crowds, rail timing, classic city heat and rainy-day alternatives before the route is confirmed.

  • Book key hotels, rail sectors and private guides early for popular regions.
  • Keep weather-flex days around mountain, river and terrace landscapes.
  • In Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, start outdoor sights early and save evenings for atmosphere.
